Sentence Structure: Subject-Verb-Object

Beginner

Chinese typically follows Subject + Verb + Object. Time and location often appear before the verb.

我喜欢中文。

Wǒ xǐhuan zhōngwén.

I like Chinese.

他昨天去了北京。

Tā zuótiān qù le Běijīng.

He went to Beijing yesterday.

  • Chinese verbs do not conjugate by tense.
  • Time expressions usually appear before the verb.
  • Keep SVO order consistent while practicing.

Using 的 (de)

Beginner

的 is used for possession and modification.

我的书

wǒ de shū

my book

红色的车

hóngsè de chē

  • 的 can be omitted in some close relationships (e.g. 我妈妈).
  • Use 的 more often with descriptive modifiers.
  • Do not confuse 的 with 得 and 地.

Question Particles: 吗 (ma) and 呢 (ne)

Beginner

吗 forms yes/no questions, while 呢 is often used to ask back or check status.

你是学生吗?

Nǐ shì xuésheng ma?

Are you a student?

你呢?

Nǐ ne?

  • Use 吗 only for yes/no questions.
  • Use 呢 for reciprocal or contextual follow-up questions.
  • Do not combine 吗 with question words like 什么.
